A front-door intercom and a staff-access system solve different problems. The doors, users and person responsible for administration need to be clear.

Door material, frame, lock type, closing action and emergency egress affect the hardware and mounting method.
Users and permissions
Establishes who may enter, which doors they may use, when access is allowed and who will manage later changes.
Power, network and fail state
Controllers, locks and intercoms need suitable power and, where required, network connectivity. Fail-safe or fail-secure behaviour must suit the door and site requirements.
Visitors and integration
Visitor calling, door release, time attendance and links to other systems should be specified only where the equipment and site support them.

The access method should match the users, administration and door hardware. Compatibility needs to be confirmed before equipment is selected.
Card or keypad access
Cards suit named users and revocable permissions. Keypads can be practical for shared codes, but code management and change procedures still need an owner.
Biometric options
Biometric readers can support individual identification, but privacy, enrolment, user acceptance and applicable requirements must be considered before use.
Time-attendance integration
Access events and attendance records are not automatically the same requirement. Controller, software and reporting compatibility should be confirmed before integration.
Video intercom
A video intercom should be planned around the entrance, who answers calls, where the door is released and whether any remote-calling requirement is supported by the selected equipment.
